The monument, a feat of great technological prowess, was built for the World’s Fair in 1889. It was Gustave Eiffel’s conception of a gigantic, complete revolutionary project to build a metal tower standing 300 metres – more than 1,000 feet – in height. It took just 26 months to build the structure.

Did you know that the world-renowned emblem of Paris was originally a temporary project, supposed to last just 20 years? Both when it was built and in discussions of its future fate in the 1920s, the Eiffel Tower was heavily criticized. The controversy was already raging as early as 1887. Intellectuals the likes of Emile Zola and Guy de Maupassant sent an open letter against the project in the most scathing terms: “The useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower […] the dishonour of Paris…”. But the Iron Lady would enjoy some happy times thanks to suggestions from Gustave Eiffel. The Eiffel Tower was placed in the service of scientific and communication projects…
